Chris Robinson Launches Congressional Campaignmore

Letter to Maryland’s First District

Dear Friends:

I am running for the United States Congress because I believe that one person can make a difference.

We cannot continue down the path we are on today on issues as important as the war in Iraq, the lack of adequate, affordable health care, energy independence and the environment, huge trade deficits, and a burgeoning national debt. This is not a time for half-measures and waffling. The scripted, play-it-safe politics practiced in Washington has short-changed all of us.

• We must bring about a sensible end to our nation’s involvement in the war in Iraq. Our troops have done everything they were asked to do. Sadam Hussein is gone. There are no weapons of mass destruction. A freely elected government is in place. There remains an internal struggle for power which the Iraqis themselves must resolve. Our troops cannot win someone else’s civil war. We need to stop pouring our future into that sea of conflict.

• We must expand access to quality health care while reducing costs. Today, more than 17 per cent of our national income is spent to keep people well enough to work. No working family can afford to devote that much of their income to health care. Not only is our health care system excessively costly, we still have 45 million Americans without health insurance. A health care plan for the future must meet three criteria: (1) everyone is covered; (2) costs are reduced; and (3) financing is sustainable.

• We must commit ourselves to the goal of energy independence. The cornerstone of any U. S. energy policy must be conservation. However, conservation alone is not enough. We need to develop clean, affordable alternatives to oil. Our continued dependence on foreign oil has unacceptable political and economic consequences.

A life-long Democrat, lawyer and small business owner with a general law practice in Dorchester County, I have practiced law on Maryland’s Eastern Shore for twelve years. Before that I served as Legislative Director/Chief of Staff to the former Democratic Congressman in Maryland’s First District. I was instrumental in drafting legislation to clean-up the Chesapeake Bay, replenish oyster beds, restore the beaches of Ocean City and other important measures for Maryland’s farmers, watermen, veterans, civil servants and seniors—citizens from all walks of life in Maryland.

I will be a tireless advocate for health care for all Americans, a healthy environment, and restoring our Chesapeake Bay to a healthy state. I will vote for and strongly advocate in Congress a policy to begin withdrawing our troops from Iraq. As a fiscal conservative, I will fight for sound economic policies—including a balanced federal budget—that foster economic development and create jobs. I will fight for a new energy policy that focuses on clean, affordable energy, encourages conservation, protects our environment and reduces our dependence on foreign oil.

If you share these goals, I ask you to support my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the United States Congress.

Sincerely yours,

Christopher R. Robinson
